Frequently Asked Questions
We know that starting a musical journey can bring up a lot of questions!
At Te Rauhii, we believe music is for everyone. Below, we’ve answered the most common questions we receive from our whaanau and community. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, please don’t hesitate to reach out – we love a chat!
What programmes does Te Rauhii offer?
Te Rauhii offers community-based music programmes designed to support children’s musical, social, and personal development.
General Music: Our most popular lessons! These group classes engage students in choral singing, a variety of instruments including drumming, xylophones, recorder and ukulele, and storytelling through music.
String Scholarships: Students may apply to learn a string instrument (such as violin, viola, cello, or double bass). Scholarship awardees receive one-on-one practical lessons, music theory lessons, and access to graded exams.
Does my child need prior musical experience?
No prior musical experience is required. Many of our students begin with little or no formal music background. Our programmes are designed to meet students where they are and help them grow in confidence and skill over time.
How do I enrol my child?
Email us directly at [email protected] for an enrolment form. Paper copies can also be found at Nawton School reception (where Te Rauhii lessons are held).
How much does it cost?
Te Rauhii music lessons are 100% FREE to enrolled students! We are very proud to deliver high quality education without financial barriers. If your child wants to learn, we want to teach them!
Does my child need their own instrument?
No – instruments are loaned at no cost by Te Rauhii.
How often are sessions and how long do they run?
General Music: These lessons run on a Monday or Thursday afternoon (depending on which day works best for your family) 3.30 – 5.00pm in the Nawton School Hall. We also provide afternoon tea from 3.00pm. Full timetables are provided at the start of each term.
String Scholarship: Timetables are individually created for each Scholarship student. If you have lost yours, please contact us.
How important is regular attendance?
Regular attendance is very important. Our programmes are ensemble-based, meaning students learn and progress together. Consistent attendance helps students build skills, confidence, and a sense of belonging, and ensures the group can rehearse and perform effectively.
What happens if my child is sick or can’t attend?
If your child is unwell, we ask that they stay home to help keep everyone safe. Please let us know if your child will be absent. If a child becomes unwell during a session, a caregiver will be contacted to collect them.
Will my child perform in concerts or events?
Yes! Performance is an important and exciting part of Te Rauhii. Students are supported to perform in concerts and community events when they are ready. We work hard to ensure performances are positive, encouraging experiences that build confidence and pride.
Who do I contact if I have a question or concern?
Please reach out to our General Manager Jex at [email protected] or 027 217 0693 – she would love to hear from you!
Can parents or whaanau be involved or volunteer?
Yes! We welcome whaanau involvement and value the support of volunteers. This can include helping at events, assisting with sessions, or supporting behind the scenes. If you’re interested in volunteering, please get in touch with us to learn more.
